For most people traveling to Thailand for 30 days or less, non extendible visas are issued at the airport. For stays longer than 30 days a tourist visa, issued in your country of origin, valid for two months and extendible for up to a further month (500 baht for 30 day extension) while in Thailand are usual.

It is now possible at some embassies to get a 3-month multiple-entry visa. It is best to check with the Thai embassy in your country.
